Families of GMS,
Recently, one of our many beautiful walking trails in Smithfield was targeted by obscene, racist, and homophobic graffiti (Smithfield Observer Article). As school leaders, we are appalled and disappointed that the Black and LGBTQ communities have been so publicly targeted in our town. The police are investigating, and we are hopeful that the individuals are found and held accountable for their actions.
Let us take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to being a school community where respect, acceptance and understanding are taught and expected. Through our A World of Difference Peer Training Program and our No Place for Hate Coalition, it is our hope to have an impact on those that harbor hate. More importantly, we also want to reaffirm and express our commitment of allyship to marginalized groups.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us or your child’s school counselor with any questions or concerns. If you or your child have any information regarding the graffiti incident, please report that information to the Smithfield Police Department.
