GMS is extremely proud to announce that our school has been recognized and designated as an official “No Place for Hate” School by the Anti-Defamation League for the 2020/2021 school year!
As our school embarked on this journey of improvement, a coalition of staff, students and family members met together throughout the year to discuss issues of diversity, bias, equity and inclusion at our school, as well as planning multiple events throughout the year.
During the 2020/2021 school year, a sampling of initiatives that contributed to our designation were:
Forming a coalition which regularly met to discuss issues and plan activities;
Signing the “No Place for Hate” pledge (this was done by over 100 students/staff on FlipGrid);
Sharing the Humans of GMS Campaign, which spotlighted the various life experiences of students and staff in our building;
Completing our second year of A World of Difference Peer Training Program, which trains student leaders to facilitate activities about bias, bullying and inclusion;
Incorporating lessons facilitated by teachers around the topics of diversity, equity and inclusion within our advisory program.
Staff at the Anti-Defamation League reviewed all of our initiatives and coalition meeting notes, and determined that GMS met the criteria for the designation. We will be receiving a banner to display at school which sends a message to all who enter GMS that we stand against racism and hate in all of its manifestation, and that we strive to be a school community where all are accepted and celebrated.
Thank you to all of the students, staff, and families who have helped make this happen. We look forward to continuing this important work next year, and are encouraged by this recognition of progress.
